UGC Meeting Minutes
The Undergraduate Council has reviewed and approved minutes from the 11/3/22 UGC
meeting.
Approved Course & Program Proposals
The Undergraduate Council has approved the course and program changes listed
below. Additions and changes will be presented at the December Faculty Senate
meeting.
Human Context of Science and Technology Certificate (Program Change)
PHED 180 – Cardio Fitness for Life (New Course)
Tabled Course & Program Proposals
The Undergraduate Council has tabled the course and program changes listed below.
ENME 408 – Engineering Design (Course Change)
• This proposal was tabled because the same courses were listed as both
“Prerequisites” and “Prerequisites or Corequisites.” The rationale suggested that
the courses were intended to be prerequisites and not corequisites, so we are
sending the proposal back to allow the department to make changes. Please
either remove the courses from “Prerequisites or Corequisites” or clarify in the
rationale that the courses can be corequisites.
• We also note that the course description is not in complete sentences. While
departments are not required to update course descriptions to complete
sentences, we encourage departments to do so when making other changes.
PHED 176 – Beginning Swimming (New Course)
• This course was tabled because the academic content of the course was not
apparent from the syllabus or learning objectives. The course description is only
one sentence and focuses entirely on skills. It was unclear what content would be
covered on the written tests.
• The UGC notes that the syllabus references a university attendance policy, but
no such policy exists.
• The committee also encourages the department to consult SDS or OEI to
discuss accessibility and accommodations in this course.
PHED 177 – Intermediate Swimming (New Course)
• This course was tabled because there was not enough academic content, with
only one learning objective covering academic content rather than swimming
skills.
• The UGC notes that the syllabus references a university attendance policy, but
no such policy exists.
• The committee also encourages the department to consult SDS or OEI to
discuss accessibility and accommodations in this course. The department may
wish to consider whether improvement metrics, rather than absolute standards,
could make the course more accessible.
APRs
SAPH (presented by Gary Williams) – The UGC noted recommendations for program
changes that may be presented to the UGC in the future. The committee forwards the
APR to the full Faculty Senate for consideration.

Procedural exception for S/U grading – Form from Carmen
Carmen Cain presented the new Curriculog form that will facilitate addition of the new
S/U grading option. There were no corrections or objections to the form, so the new
form will be announced at the December Faculty Senate meeting.
